The E8 San Antonio guide

Make more of
your time here.

Riverfront mornings. Breakfast tacos. A little Texas history. Plan a San Antonio stay around what you actually enjoy, with time left to settle in.

Start with a day plan, find a neighborhood, or skip straight to the practical details.

A good place to start

Three ways to spend a day.

These are suggested combinations, with one main outing at a time. Swap stops to suit your pace, the weather, and your group.

Your first San Antonio visit

Morning: Begin at the Alamo. Church admission is free, but a reservation is required. Tours and the Alamo Exhibit have separate ticket options.

Afternoon: Explore the downtown River Walk, pause for lunch, then leave room for a shaded break or time back at your stay.

Evening: Return for a riverfront dinner or head to Southtown for Mexican food.

Plan around your Alamo reservation first. Keep the rest of the day flexible rather than filling every hour.

A slower food & culture day

Morning: Have coffee and breakfast at the Pearl, then browse the shops and open spaces.

Afternoon: Choose the San Antonio Museum of Art for an indoor visit, or take a shorter walk along Museum Reach.

Evening: Make a dinner reservation at the Pearl or explore Southtown. Check the museum’s opening days before setting your plan.

Pearl and Museum Reach suit an unhurried outing. You do not need to walk all the way to downtown to enjoy the river.

A family day with breathing room

Morning: Pick The DoSeum for hands-on play or the Witte Museum for dinosaurs, science, and Texas stories.

Afternoon: Have lunch, then choose park time or a rest back at your home base.

Early evening: Let kids play at Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair before a relaxed dinner.

One museum is enough for a satisfying day. Save the second for another outing instead of rushing through both.

Find your pace

Choose an area, then explore.

San Antonio spreads out. Grouping stops by area gives you more time enjoying the city and less time crossing it.

Downtown & the River Walk

Choose this for a first visit, the Alamo, riverfront dining, and the classic San Antonio experience. Park once for a downtown outing and explore a manageable section on foot.

The river has distinct stretches: downtown is the restaurant-lined hub, Museum Reach runs north, and Mission Reach takes you toward trails and the southern missions. Use the River Walk neighborhood guide to choose your starting point.

Pearl & Museum Reach

A good choice for coffee, food, shops, and a river walk with a different rhythm from downtown. Build a morning around the Pearl, then add the Museum of Art if you want a longer outing.

Check Pearl’s dining and events before you go, especially if a market or a particular restaurant is the reason for your visit.

Southtown & King William

Choose this for historic streets, galleries, and a meal away from the downtown riverfront. King William is a residential historic district within the wider Southtown area, so enjoy the architecture while respecting homes and driveways.

Browse the Southtown neighborhood guide for galleries and current happenings, then pair your walk with lunch or dinner.

Brackenridge Park area

Make this your starting point for a garden or museum outing. The Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio Zoo, and Witte Museum give you different ways to spend the day without trying to cover the whole city.

The Japanese Tea Garden has free admission. Its lower garden is reached only by stairs; the upper garden and pavilion have ramp access. Choose your route accordingly.

The southern missions

Start at Mission San José for an introduction to the missions, then decide whether to add Concepción, San Juan, or Espada. These are separate sites, so plan transportation between them rather than assuming a short downtown stroll.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park has free admission. Check site alerts and visitor information before setting out, and be considerate of worshippers at the mission churches.

Make room at the table

A few meals worth planning around.

Mix a destination meal with simpler stops. Menus, hours, and reservations can change, so use the restaurant’s own details before heading out.

Mi Tierra, Market Square

Choose Mi Tierra Café y Panadería for a lively Tex-Mex meal and a bakery stop. Pair it with browsing Market Square rather than making a separate trip just for dessert.

Rosario’s, Southtown

Rosario’s ComidaMex & Bar is a Mexican dining option to build into a Southtown outing. Check the menu and reservation options when planning a group meal or an evening out.

A meal at the Pearl

Use the Pearl’s restaurant directory to choose by menu and occasion, whether you want a casual lunch or a dinner reservation. Pick your restaurant before you arrive if your group has dietary needs.

Breakfast tacos & a quiet start

Leave one morning open for breakfast tacos near your day’s first stop. Compare the current menu, order a few fillings to share, and avoid crossing town for breakfast when your main outing is in the opposite direction.

Match the day to your group

Kids, hot afternoons & rainy days.

For hands-on play

The DoSeum is the pick for interactive children’s exhibits and play. Review the exhibits for your children’s interests, and check tickets and visitor information before leaving.

For curious museum-goers

Choose the Witte Museum for nature, science, and Texas history, or the San Antonio Museum of Art for an art-focused afternoon. Both give you an indoor anchor when outdoor plans feel less appealing.

For a lower-cost outing

Combine a free-admission stop such as the Japanese Tea Garden or the missions with a simple lunch. Yanaguana Garden offers outdoor play, including adaptive equipment. Budget separately for parking, food, and any ticketed extras.

For a big attraction day

San Antonio Zoo, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, and Morgan’s Wonderland are options for different ages and interests. Use San Antonio’s family attraction guide to compare them, then check the attraction’s calendar, accessibility information, and tickets. Give your chosen park its own day.

A change of scenery

Leave room for a day out.

Choose one destination and check the drive from your actual stay. Travel time depends on your starting point, traffic, and the day’s plans.

Gruene & New Braunfels

Head to Gruene Historic District for historic buildings, independent shops, food, and live music. Check the music calendar if a show is your main reason to go, then leave time to browse rather than racing to another town.

If you add a river activity, check the outfitter’s conditions, age requirements, and seasonal availability first.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Choose a guided underground outing at Natural Bridge Caverns. Reserve the tour you want and wear shoes with good traction. Cavern routes involve stairs and steep, wet surfaces, and strollers are not allowed on the tours.

Review the physical requirements before booking. This is a different kind of day from a level museum visit, even though much of it is underground.

Before you head out

The details that make a stay easier.

Car, rideshare, or transit?

A car is a practical choice when your plans include Schertz, several parts of San Antonio, or a day trip. Rideshare can suit a single dinner outing. For public transit, check the VIA trip planner using your exact starting point, destination, and return time.

A walkable attraction district does not mean your accommodation is within walking distance. Check the full journey before deciding how to travel.

Downtown parking & walking

Select parking near your first stop, then group downtown activities together. The Alamo does not have its own parking lot; its visitor FAQs explain nearby options. Allow time to get from your parking space to any reserved entry.

If traveling with a stroller or mobility aid, check step-free access to your chosen River Walk entry point rather than following the nearest staircase.

Plan for the weather

On hot days, put garden walks and outdoor sightseeing early in your plan, carry water, and use the afternoon for an indoor attraction or a break. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and a light layer for air-conditioned spaces are useful.

Check the forecast and any venue alerts before leaving. Keep an indoor alternative for a stormy afternoon.

Reserve the important parts

Book required Alamo Church entry, your chosen cavern tour, and any meal or show you would be disappointed to miss. Check opening days before pairing a museum with another stop. Leave the spaces between reservations open for meals, traffic, and rest.

Stay for your reason

Choose a home around your plans.

Your daily destination matters as much as your sightseeing list, especially during a longer visit.

Medical visits & work assignments

E8’s San Antonio apartments are in the Medical Center area. Compare the home with your hospital, workplace, or appointment location first, then plan leisure outings around your schedule. Explore our furnished stays for work and extended visits.

Military visits & family time

For graduation, relocation, or a base visit, start with the installation and the entrance you need. Our military stays guide includes property-specific driving comparisons. Serene Views in Schertz offers five bedrooms and a private pool for a larger group.

Compare bedrooms, amenities, and location on each listing. Use the property’s booking calendar to check availability for your dates.

A full day out.
A home to come back to.
